About baptism

WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF BAPTISM?

Baptism is a public act that celebrates a person’s entry into the community of faith and an outward act that symbolizes the spiritual transformation that has happened in a person’s life. As they are immersed in water and lifted out, it reflects their union with Christ in his death and resurrection.

In him you were circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. Colossians 2:11-12

Baptism signifies our new life in Jesus.

We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. Romans 6:4

Baptism shows the unity of believers in the Church.

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. Ephesians 4:4-6

WHO SHOULD BE BAPTIZED?

Those who put their faith in Jesus should be baptized.

Those who accepted his message were baptized... Acts 2:41a

But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Acts 8:12

WHY SHOULD A CHRISTIAN BE BAPTIZED?

Baptism is an act of obedience to Jesus.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:18-20

Baptism follows the example of Jesus.

At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Mark 1:9

Baptism publicly declares that you belong to God.

So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. Galatians 3:26-27

WHEN SHOULD I BE BAPTIZED?

People should be baptized when they put their faith in Jesus.

Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. Acts 2:41
